Check List post installation WordPress Tips Tricks Tweaks

After installing WordPress on your server you will have a minimum of customization and parameter settings before you can start blogging.

Update the slogan of the site.



You should now be able to write your first article. Good luck and long life to your new site



By default the slogan (or tagline) is "A blog using Wordpress" and this is obviously not satisfactory. We modify it in the Settings menu> General.



Your slogan should be concise and thought for referencing. It usually appears in the header of your site. Important, but you can change them easily afterwards.
WWW or no WWW.



This is set at WordPress Admin> Settings> Web address and web address of Wordpress Blog



By default WordPress install without the www (if you do not attack the installation WWW.votresite.tld) and if you insist it is a parameter to specify as soon as possible.



In my case I do not recommend using the WWW subdomain extension because it unnecessarily URLs and adds nothing.



On the subject of the WWW is still worth checking that your site is still accessible with the www and see the settings in your host if the www if it is not the case.



Choose a policy of listings on the site.



By default, nobody can register and if it is not necessary for your project, I recommend (for security issues) to keep off that possibility.



This has no effect on the choices you make later to the comments.
Broadcast only a sample of items in RSS feeds.



Your opinion may be different but I prefer to broadcast only excerpts in my RSS feed. This happens in Settings> Reading.
Comments policy.



The default system prompt to not miss the comments for authors who have already seen one of their comment posted. I prefer to uncheck this and allow all comments. From experience, I rely on Akismet to prevent comment spammers.



In a first time, we can leave to send email to each new comment, but it can quickly become boring and you can change this setting.
Permalinks.



If your provider accepts the URL rewriting, I recommend opting for a customized structure as simple as possible ie /% postname% /. Do not forget the "trailing slash" (it seems to me that recently recommended by Google).



This is set in Settings> Permalinks. Choose the personalized structure and therefore put /% postname% / in the parameter field.



For me this setting is one of the most important. If you change it after starting the site and its SEO you will have to set up 301 redirects from old URLs to new.



Prefixes of categories and keywords.



For questions of SEO I highly recommend you to inform the appropriate prefixes to Settings> Permalinks.



Consider the words consistent with the theme of your site in order to optimize the referencing.



For example for the site of my wife on the anniversary can be chosen "activity" for the categories and "children" for the tags or keywords (not yet in place at the time of this writing).



If you have no idea, I suggest you at least "categories" for classes (this will prevent the English 'category') and maybe 'blog' or 'theme' instead of tag?



Activate Akismet.



Akismet is the WordPress plugin that helps eliminate comment spam. It is very important if you allowed comments on your blog.



We have to open an account on WordPress.com, and retrieve a key to activate the Akismet extension.



The key is in the menu "profile" of BO WordPress.com.



Installing the necessary plugins.



Again everyone does what they want. It should however be aware that adding plugins can weaken the security of your site and slow it down and it should not normally play host to install a plugin on a site "important."



For me, here in descending order extensions necessary:



* Backup: WordPress Database Backup - I then setting it to send me a backup of the database each week.
* Cache: WP Super Cache - Required to improve the speed of your site. As appreciated by your readers by search engines. Suitable even for low traffic sites. I enabled it with the default settings.
* Referencing: All in One SEO Pack - deserves a companion paper to not do anything stupid. At least noindex uncheck the categories and archives. Ask also what will be the meta description tag, very important for the snippet in the SERPs.
* Security: WordPress Exploit Scanner - You can not know how many times I've been pissing on my WordPress installation ... A run regularly (if it works).
* Contact Form: Contact Form 7 - Depends on the nature of your project (blog / site). A test after you have configured and implemented on an ad-hoc page.
* Related Articles: this, in my opinion a good idea to post the articles on the end of each article. To do so, if you use the simple tags plugin allows tags. For those who do not use the tags to see this on the articles.



Installing a custom theme.



Moved from Appearance> Add new themes (after upload your theme via FTP, themes for WordPress tutorial in French do not settle "all alone" from the admin).



This is one reason that promote longer have to choose to install its own WordPress (WordPress.com and leave). Necessary step. On WordPress tutorial you're spoiled for choice, do not hesitate to dive in my WordPress themes.
Choosing widgets.

The widgets are to choose according to your project and given the characteristics of your chart.



The main widgets that you can consider:



* Search: If your theme does not have a search box in the header.
* Pages: Some themes are provided with a menu based on the pages that make unnecessary this widget.
* Categories: Depending on your future use of this system. If all your items will be issued with a single category (like "news") that widget is useless.
* Tag cloud: if you intend to use tags.
* Recent Comments: it is generally accepted that a good blog is a blog comment. Adds value to your commentators and animate your homepage (probably also good for SEO).
* Latest published articles: I always put, this is information that may be of particular interest your visitors come from Google on a page deep.



A little bit of security.



As WordPress is widely used around the world, the slightest flaws are quickly exploited and it is best to take some precautions in terms of security.



I'm not an expert but here are some interesting tips:



* Create an administrator account and delete the other admin account admin. This will get you away from some script cracking the password of the famous and usual admin account.
* Limit access to certain directories WordPress as explained in securing his blog.



Statistical tools.



There are a lot but some are more popular than others. It may be worth installing them at the beginning of the creation of your site as often as it is when the excitement of creating feeds of raw statistics.

* Xiti: damn good stats tool. I made a little plugin that allows you to set Xiti as a widget.
* Google Analytics: using a plugin like Google Analyticator. But some prefer to edit "by hand" footer.php file of the theme for reasons of speed and compatibility (see comments on this article on Google Analytics and WordPress).



Remove the paper and the default comment.



If you, as recommended above, deleted the admin account, you will probably already have this article deleted by default.
